Gaby's time as a Working Student at Echometer (experience report)
How I cam to Echometer
Throughout this difficult year post-graduation, I was looking for full-time work in order to stay in Germany. With the virus and the number of responses from my applications, it clearly wasn’t happening. Therefore, when I had an offer from Echometer to be the in-house translator and learn content marketing for the blog, I took it as a great chance to learn and collect experience.

Facts about me:
- Born and raised in Hong Kong
- BA in Fine Arts - University of Hong Kong
- MA in National and Transnational Studies - WWU Munster
- 6 months as a working student
- 4 previous internships, one in a startup!
My start at Echometer
After starting the job, I was excited to work closely in all aspects of the company that I was interested in, and even started doing sales as well. It was a really great feeling, knowing that my abilities were trusted and that I was producing results. Although I have been translating material for the last 10 years or so, I mostly did it unprofessionally and didn’t learn many new skills from it. I was eager to build upon that and learn content marketing. Echometer gave me the chance to use Analytics, play around with A/B testing on Optimise, and explore Wordpress. After I took on a more sales-centric role, I started making sales calls and did a couple of coaching sessions. I became a lot more confident in my presentation skills, learned a lot about our product and how to use LinkedIn Sales Navigator and LeadConnect. Thanks to this, I now have way too many connections on LinkedIn! :D Through all of this, and I cannot emphasise this enough, I was generously offered the opportunity to learn about everything I had interest in, and could bring to my next job. Alongside this, I made some friends for life. I believe that this startup experience is something that I will likely not be able to experience again.

My tasks
- Translation of blog articles into English
- Translating and optimizing website content
- Writing LinkedIn teasers for newly translated blog articles
- Communication with Asian business partners
- LinkedIn sales outreach
- Conducting sales demos for product
- etc etc etc
My highlight - apart from the cocktail party
Evidently, to begin work with a cocktail party was a huge highlight for me. Other memorable moments were our online Christmas party with an escape room exercise, our hangout after work at the office (with a great view at the harbour!) and our team climbing date.
On a more serious note, getting to build my own free trial landing page was a big step for me. I got to use it to test out our hypothesis with my sales leads on LinkedIn - and it made me feel extremely productive.
What I benefitted from at Echometer
Echometer gave me a chance when no one else would, and gave me a chance to learn that I would otherwise likely not get at most other companies.
I was encouraged to try everything, make mistakes, fix my mistakes and listen in to what everyone else was doing. I was offered a job at Huawei in B2B marketing, which I believe that was mostly because of what I could take with me from the 6 months at Echometer.
Echometer offers:
- A small and friendly team in a startup environment
- Individual support in personal career development
- Practical experience in marketing and sales
- Experience with agile ways of working, and now Holacracy
- Regular team events
- Flexible working hours
- Chance to work remotely, on-site, or both

My conclusion
“My working student position at Echometer allowed me to get insights into various topics and work independently. At the same time I was encourage to speak up and implement my own ideas. The experience really accelerated my development and prepared me for my next position at Huawei.”
